Arabian Nights (As Mil e Uma Noites: Volume 1–3, 2015) by Miguel Gomes follows the eponymous collection of fairytales, short stories and burlesques. Gomes skilfully transferred its scatological, in places even brutal and “punk” nature into ten stories from contemporary Portugal in the period between August 2013 and July 2014. The film intertwines fiction, documentary, pseudo-documentary and archive footage. Despite the predominating share of fiction, the film cannot be analysed without considering the documentary film tradition – among others, direct film and cinéma vérité.
