The text is the Introduction to Cult Cinema, the first in-depth academic examination of all aspects of cult cinema, including its primary audiences, its myriad genres, and the theoretical perspectives that inform a film’s “cult” status. The introduction focuses on numerous historical and contextual definitions and understandings of the terms “cult” and “cult cinema”. Through the prism that cult cinema has been influenced by its historical and other contextual developments, the authors provide a brief overview of the historical emergence of cult cinema as a subject, particularly within an academic context. They also focus on deffnitions of cult cinema that come in four contexts: sociological studies, reception studies, textual interpretations, and aesthetic analyses.
