A Story of Sahel Sounds: Music of the Outskirts, Music of the World
A Story of Sahel Sounds (2016), a documentary by Tobias Adam, Florian Kläger and Markus Milcke of the German filmmaker collective Neopan Kollektiv, follows Christopher Kirkley, an American independent producer of the music of the West African Sahel. The article discusses the importance of music for the environment in which it is created and performed, and contextualizes it through the prism of socio-economic conditions. The film is a collective work by Neopan Kollektiv’s trio, and Kirkley, the subject of the documentary, who also assumed the role of co-director.
