The underrepresentation of female filmmakers and stories about women is a very current topic. However, a look into the past reveals a rich history of women working in (mainstream) cinema. Female film pioneers had not only worked in front of the camera, but also in various film professions behind it until they were more or less excluded from the film industry due to different factors. The article maps a part of this important history and presents some of the most important female film pioneers.
