Chris Marker's Film Essays
Marker’s work, conjoining cinema and literature, document and experiment, activism and meditation, reaches the highest point of the authentically French philosophical (Montaigne) and film (Astruc) essayism. In a essayistic manner of attempting and exploring, it will be presented through the metaphor of hypertext – by transversal, non-linear, personal searching, focusing on the following knots/ links: film as ars memorie/remembering as an act of fiction; cinema-vérité or cinéma vérité?/representability of truth in documentary genre/metadocumentary; interpenetrative concepts of memory and history; history(s) and temporality(s); release of time-images/simultaneousness of temporalities; essayism as form of activism/praxis – humanity – utopia.
