Circumstances of Love
Dance of Life and a Documentary Approach to the Subject of Assisted Suicide
Dance of Life (Ples življenja, 2026), a documentary film by writer, director and director of photography Siniša Gačić, with Andrej Nagode as co-writer and editor, tells the story of an older couple, Alenka and Marijan, from Sveti Tomaž, Slovenia. Alenka suffers from Morquio syndrome, a chronic condition responsible for the steady and severe decline in her health, which has resulted in her decision to end her life through assisted suicide. The film follows the couple over a period of five years as they come to terms, both individually and together, with the inevitable: one of them will die and leave the other behind. Although the themes of death and assisted suicide initially sparked the filmmaker’s interest in making the documentary, the focus shifted during filming and editing away from the primary topic and towards the dynamics of the loving relationship between lifelong partners.
