Prompted by Srđan Kovačević’s observational documentary The Thing to Be Done (Ono što treba činiti, 2025), which examines the early stages of the activities of Delavska svetovalnica, this essay comments on the organisation’s place within the broader context of the workers’ struggle and identifies it as an important and distinctive triage centre. It analyses the effectiveness of the film’s moral stance, which, despite its clear commitment to a systemic perspective, succeeds in addressing both the tragic nature of individual cases and the simple truth of the reprehensibility of exploiting the most vulnerable workers, without resorting to pathos. The essay seeks to present Kovačević’s documentary both as a detailed study of the functioning of a specific institution and as a more general document on the complexity and diversity of the struggles for workers’ rights.
