Forgotten Railway Tracks and Human Values in Newsreel 242

The text deals with the latest Newsreel by Nika Autor (subtitled Sunny Railways), which carries the number 242, representing the length of the railway line between Šamac and Sarajevo. Today, the abandoned line, which no longer operates, serves the journeys of different types of passengers; refugees in search of a better future. Through its in-depth reading of the film, the text examines the gaps between the Yugoslav past and the capitalist present and, through references to the filmmaker’s oeuvre, asks whether it is still possible to restore humanity in today’s world.
