The film language of Apples (Mila, 2020) significantly shapes the spectator’s experience, which is a key aspect of the film’s concept. The Greek feature follows Aris in a sci-fi dystopia struck by a pandemic of memory loss. The narrative’s chronological structure traces the changes in the character and the shifting effect on the spectator. The occasional omissions of emotional cues or alienation effects raise questions about the film’s political, social and philosophical meaning. Its spatial language, character presentation and the (deceptive) expressivity of acting shape the viewer’s response. With his purposive use of the cinematic means of expression, Nikou prompts emotional and intellectual reactions and poses existential questions about identity and memory.
