Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu, 2019) is the first film by Céline Sciamma that is not a coming-of-age story. What seems to be a deceptively simple lesbian romance conceals a carefully prepared political experiment. More specifically, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is an attempt at the construction of a female gaze, a concept that remains an impossibility to many.
