Sirāt (2025), the third feature film by Spanish-French director Oliver Laxe, is a film in which image and sound play equally important roles. The music is not merely a backdrop to the image but, at times, transcends it, especially in the first fifteen minutes of the film, when it literally overwhelms the viewer. The film’s protagonists also build the story through their presence, rather than through dramatization. Nevertheless, the film’s journey leads the characters into a connection with time and space and, through trials touching on life and death, even to metaphysical questions. These have always been the topics of the greatest directors, such as Andrei Tarkovsky and Krzysztof Kieślowski.
