The Birth of Love, Passion and Enjoyment from the Spirit of Jealousy
How does an object become an object of desire? The question that gave birth to René Girard’s theory of mimetic desire is the central question of our analysis of love, passion, enjoyment and a successful sexual act in select films shown at LIFFe. The article draws on Jean-Pierre Dupuy’s concept of jealousy and his version of mimetic theory. According to Dupuy, jealous persons are the ones that find themselves excluded from a closed unity of a happy couple. But it is exactly this exclusion that gives rise to and intensifies their desire, enabling them to experience love, passion and enjoyment.
