Who Looks at Whom in What Way? Little Trouble Girls and the Question of the Female Gaze
This paper addresses the question and the definition of the female gaze in Little Trouble Girls (Kaj ti je deklica, 2025). I attempt to define the female gaze in the context of film theorist Laura Mulvey and her essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” (1975) and filmmaker Joey Soloway and their lecture (masterclass) “The Female Gaze” (2016). In the second part of the paper, I try to identify and define the female gaze through the example of Little Trouble Girls, focusing primarily on the depiction of discovering one’s own sexuality and the portrayal of the accompanying sense of guilt. In doing so, I raise the question of when and how a film effectively speaks about the shared experiences of a specific (marginalised) group of people, and when and why it may be less successful in doing so.
