Disney’s Bambi as an Amplified Icon of Innocent Childhood
The article delivers a critical content analysis of Bambi (1942), a Disney classic and one of the most popular animated films, which is often deemed unproblematic compared to other Disney classics. The central thesis of the paper is that the film makes its main character, Bambi, an amplified icon of the romantic myth of innocent childhood by framing its narrative as a naturalistic depiction of the animal life cycle and combining the childlike human and animal elements in its depiction of Bambi both visually and in content. This makes Bambi, as a child-animal, a perfect embodiment of the myth of innocent childhood, which sees children as ever-universal, benevolent and socially unaffected beings. Through it, the film covertly introduces patriarchal gender roles as seemingly natural.
