The essay is inspired by Newsreel Front’s installation consisting of two videos by Chris Marker: Slon Tango (1992) and Prime Time in the Camps (1993). Juxtaposed – one filmed at a zoo and the other in a refugee camp – they evoke similarities between non-human and human animals in the circumstances of custody. The author claims that, in the context of speciesism as the dominant paradigm (where murdering is radically normalized), freedom is an aesthetic phenomenon, yet it can also be realized within the given circumstances as a situation that we create even though it is not “possible”.
