Aliens are the ultimate Other. How can someone become open to the Other’s otherness? By accepting their language. By recognizing the Other within oneself. While learning an alien language, Arrival’s hero Louise Banks discovers that her future is predetermined. This inevitably poses the question of freedom: is freedom the freedom of choice or one’s acceptance of necessity? This will lead us to question the predetermined future as the form of the law of desire.
