Feminism On and Off the Screen: 1943–2022
The article examines the story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League through three points in time – the time of the league’s inception in the 1940s; 1992, when the film A League of Their Own explored this forgotten history of women’s baseball; and 2022, the year in which Amazon launched a series with the same title. There are important differences between the eras and the two media representations having to do with changes in gender, sexuality, and race politics. Through the story of A League of Their Own, this article traces some of the transformations that the images and positions of women underwent on and off screen in the 80-year timeframe.
