Transparent (2014–) is an American TV series that utilises a story of an elderly married couple and their three adult children to delve into the thematic territories of gender and gender identities, specifically, transgender identity. In the article, we try to identify and locate the innovations that the series brings to the media and to the wider (pop) cultural discourse concerning the topic in question. The central idea is that the series positively contributes to the deepening of the public discourse and the understanding of gender identities and sexual orientations and in its own right presents an alternative to the prevailing heteronormative patterns that are present in the discussed genre.
