The East–West Schism in Cinema
In this article, we address certain differences between some of the films screened at the last Motovun and Ljubljana Film Festivals (2021). During the era of the European Union’s internal division into the eastern and the western part, we observe a cultural and symbolic front, which is outlined in the works in question. Beyond the media representations, it seems that, through a realistic dispositif, works from the European and the global East and South tend to rehumanise the representatives of their own peoples and give an implicit commentary on Western representation. Some notorious films from the so-called West, which receive significantly more media attention, are to some extent self-referential and, despite different interpretations, epresent the ruling ideology.
