The Voice-Image Through the Film Representations of Bob Dylan
Through the film representations of Bob Dylan, we attempt to establish the concept of the voice-image. In doing so, we emphasise the importance of double or multiple exposure – not limited to the juxtaposition of two images but expanded to include the juxtaposition of images and voices. The relationship between image and voice is categorised according to how “extra-cinematic reality” is treated. Within this classification, we derive the close-up from the face as a specific form of multiple exposure, which we define as a mask. Masks are categorised according to their level of transparency; through this operation, we also define the concept of identity understood as the (non-)sameness-with-oneself.
