Western (2017) by Valeska Grisebach, a story of German workers in Bulgaria, explores domination in the cultural, political and economic sense. As a Berlin school filmmaker, Grisebach eschews narrative in order to make the viewers more active. A step forward in German representations of Eastern Europe, Western deconstructs the western genre conventions to critically address German national identity and expansion within Europe.
