KINO! 60 brings together questions of memory, embodiment and the power of cinematic representation. The issue opens with Darko Štrajn’s tribute to Patricio Guzmán and his commitment to creating collective memory. In the Breakthroughs section, Blaž Kavšek reflects on workers’ struggles through Srdžan Kovačević’s The Thing to Be Done, Eva Pavlič explores the relationship between love, care and assisted dying in Siniša Gačić and Andrej Nagode’s Dance of Life, while Tinkara Uršič Fratina considers family archives and the processing of trauma in Alba Zari’s White Lies. Emanuel Krajnc examines abjection and posthuman femininity in the animated film Cottage Cheese, while Eva Pavlič questions the relationship between human beings and architecture through John Smith’s Black Tower and Martin Vaughn-James’s graphic novel The Cage. Personal histories and political responsibility also connect the interviews. Petra Meterc speaks with Zahra Ghandour about the position of women in Iraq through her film Flana, and with Jihan K about the exploration of family and national history in My Father and Qaddafi. In conversation with Miranda Pennell, Vanja Gajić traces the filmmaker’s shift from dance films to a critical engagement with colonial archives and images of contemporary violence. In the Reflection section, Ema Paš explores the film essay and intimacy under computational capitalism through Gala Hernández López’s The Mechanics of Fluids and like moths to light. Jure Vovk questions contemporary cinematic spectacle through Nolan’s The Odyssey, Ela Božič examines the relationship between narrative, duration and presence in Serra’s Honour of the Knights, and Lina Eržen considers the power of the gaze and the representation of women in Jane B. for Agnès V. In the School Period section, Andrej Šprah traces the development of animated documentary and its theoretical definitions, drawing on selected examples from Animateka. In the Film and TV Studies – Peer-Reviewed section, Lina Horvat examines cinephilia, subcultural capital and male cultural authority through the film bro phenomenon on Letterboxd. Woven throughout the issue are the pieces in the Pillow Shots section: Tone Rački’s personal account of his encounters with OM produkcija, Matjaž Zorc’s Vesoljni les, and reprints of Forstnerič’s “Jablana” and selected poems from Vesna Liponik’s collection Jabk. Through these contributions, trees, vegetal embodiment and different experiences of time recur throughout the issue.
