With her debut feature Aftersun (2022), Charlotte Wells dissects memory, time and perception, juxtaposing two time periods, which pass each other and meet at the intersection of childhood reminiscence and adult longing for answers and understanding. Emotionally autobiographical, the film explores the elusiveness of memory and how it distorts and misleads us as the time passes, while focusing on the discord between objective and subjective experiences of the past by combining analogue film and home video recordings.
