Filmic Pandemic Pasts and Futures: The Case of New Queer Cinema
Among other topics, this year’s Sundance Film Festival remembered the late-1980s/early-1990s phenomenon of new queer cinema (NQC). At first glance, talking about the history of a minor cinema from the past seems like an odd choice, especially since the recent COVID-19 pandemic has had a deep impact on the present film production. However, a closer look reveals important connections between both eras, which highlight the importance of films for reflecting on the current crisis and imagining potential futures.
