Lav Diaz, the Birth of the Historical Subject

The basic goal of Michael Guarneri’s Conversations with Lav Diaz, a book composed of seven interviews that the author conducted with the filmmaker Lav Diaz between 2010 and 2020, is to describe, with great historical and biographical picturesqueness, Diaz’s origins and motives for filmmaking, which are all but arbitrary. The review of the book thus tries to delineate Diaz’s creative path, which is documented through its skilful placement in the complex narrativeness of historical sequences, seasoned with the director’s intriguing insights into many other social questions.
