The Collision of Discreet Authenticity and the Glorification of Youth in Jelena Gavrilović’s Short Fiction Films
In her short fiction films made between 2012 and 2017, the Serbian film director Jelena Gavrilović displayed an impressive level of artistic maturity. The object of her exploration is the lives of young people in urban environments, which she portrays with a combination of documentary authenticity and aestheticised glorification of her young protagonists. The article focuses on her visual style and her elusive narrative techniques, which defy conclusions and recapitulations. Even though Gavrilović made all types of short films, these fiction shorts remain the central foundation for her future work.
